WHAT IS A REGISTERED BREEDER ?

A Registered Cat or Dog Breeder Breeder is a person/s registered with a local canine or feline association who must be certified and have certified cats/dogs for breeding. A Registered Breeder is required to abide by special rules of animal welfare and to prove that their cats/dogs are verified, have had all the required tests are and in good health for breeding. The number of litters of kittens/puppies allowed to be produced are usually also limited for the purpose of the mothers well-being. Most puppies or kittens sold by registered breeders are required to be or have been desexed.

WHAT IS A BACKYARD BREEDER ?

Backyard breeders are not registered with a local canine or feline association and have chosen not to desex their cat or dog. In some cases a cat or dog would have fallen pregnant accidentally because the owner has failed to desex their pet early enough. Most backyard breeding is often associated with making as much money as possible by selling to pet shops and advertising in local news papers and online classifieds. Cats and dogs being breed in this situation are often very neglected because of poor animal welfare practices. In the end most of these animals end up in animal shelters.

BUYER BEWARE !!

Did you know that real Purebred Puppies and Kittens for sale come with a Pedigree Certificate (or are part of a Registered Pedigree Litter). If your Puppy or Kitten does not come with a Pedigree Certificate you might just have just bought from a Backyard Breeder! Please note that due to some registrars administration processing times, some Breeders do need to post pedigree certificates via the post after a new owner has taken their puppy/kitten home.

HOW DO I BECOME A REGISTERED BREEDER ?

If you are passionate about becoming a Registered Breeder it is best to contact your local Canine or Feline Registrar in your State beforehand.
